Enough with the Twitter crap already

Get your crank on Ever since yesterday and the ramping up for a Twitter boycott I have tried hard to brace myself for all the whining and moaning about how bad of a service it is and how it needs to be fixed. Everyone carried on then and all day today like we were facing the worse catastrophe since the sinking of the Titanic.

If it wasn’t carrying on about how important Twitter is people were saying that the time was coming for FriendFeed to eat Twitter’s donated pizza all while the ringleaders of the Twitter boycott are patting themselves on the back on how Ev and the boys are gonna have to listen now.

Well here’s a hint they aren’t. The simple fact is that Twitter is broken - totally broken. It spends more time in maintenance mode than my buddy’s Harley. Denials fly left right and center that it isn’t the fault of the framework they used but hey we can’t tell you what is causing the problem. Fat lot of good that is doing for the people who; for whatever reason, have come to rely on the service.

The time is quickly approaching; if it isn’t already here, where Twitter needs to shit or get off the pot. Admit what the problem is and let your insanely faithful users know what the problem is for a change; and then fix the damn problem once and for all. If not close up your doors and go on with some other useless Web 2.0 project.

As for all those backslapping boycotters do you really think the the miniscule number of folks who say they fell in with their fellow boycotting comrades is going to make one iota of difference to the Twitter crew who are famous for making you live in the dark as to what is going on. No - they are just hoping that they can get by on a wing and a prayer for another day.

Maybe the time has really come for the jump to Pownce or maybe some of you whining web geniuses should get together like you’ve been whispering in the secret Dave Winer meetings and actually put out a solid product that will finally put Twitter to rest. As for it being FriendFeed - get a grip these are two totally different services. Twitter was never meant to be FriendFeed or anything like it and neither was FriendFeed meant to be a Twitter replacement. They both serve two totally different purposes - one is a communication channel and the other is an information aggregator.

Until all you twitterholics finally get a backbone and either jump ship for good or develop a solid new product (maybe the FriendFeed boys could give some lessons on frameworks and scalability) all the whining about Twitter being down isn’t going to make one bit of difference. The only thing that will is a company that actually can admit something is very wrong - tell us what it is and how they are going to fix it.

I can hear Dr. Phil now, asking about the boycott - “How’s that working for ya now?”
