A supposition that could have far ranging effects

Is free mobile communication possible? I took a bit of a break from sitting in front of the computer to watch a bit of television with my wife and read a little bit when out of nowhere really something got me thinking along a totally different line. I am not sure exactly what spark the thought but it went something like this

“what if a clever company put together a $20.00 mobile handset and then installed Skype, Twitter and a really good mobile browser. what kind of effect would that have on the whole telecommunication industry?”

When you combine the above with WiFi in major metropolitan areas and the fact that Skype along with free member to member calling has calling to and from landline phones for ridiculously low rate. Tie in a good mobile Twitter client and you would have group messaging unequalled by any other service. Along with that since it isn’t technically a phone as covered by the FCC it wouldn’t be restricted by any regulations.

What kind of effect could this next to free communication device have on the whole telecommunication industry - from the phone makers to the service providers?

I’m not saying that this could happen but it certainly seems to be that with each passing day as our technology advances it could be possible.
