Twitter as a blog promotion tool

Twitter as a blog promotion tool Back on April 26th I wrote a post outlining an experiment that I was going to try here at WinExtra. One of the parts of the experiment was to stop using Twitter as a way to announce new posts and rely strictly on them being announced automatically on FriendFeed.

I wanted to see if indeed doing this would see any serious reduction in readers dropping by. I was more than willing to accept the cost of losing a few new readers as a result of the experiments but it turns out that the hit I have taken is more than just a few. Percentage wise I would say it would be pretty close to 1/3 of my usual unique visitor count disappeared pretty well right away and stayed that way during the following week.

Now for a lot of blogs that might not seem like a lot but for a small but growing one like WinExtra that is quite the hit to take. So I have to say that that part of the experiment could be marked as a Fail! and starting with this post I’ll be returning to announcing new posts on Twitter.

While this was a minor little experiment on a small blog it goes to show that Twitter can indeed be a valuable tool for a blogger as long as you don’t over do it and piss off your friends on Twitter.
