My home base is a little town in Ontario Canada that goes by the name of Lindsay which as the 2001 StatsCan census has a population of just over 17,000 people. I have lived in more metropolitan cities in various provinces but I always seem to come back to this small community.
When it comes to technology it isn’t what you would consider as being on the bleeding edge as far as adoption of the newest and coolest stuff. While other folks in bigger centers might get blank looks when they talk about Twitter or blogs here in this small town you’re lucky if you get a glimmer of recognition at the mention of Facebook.
So I was pleasantly surprised when I walked into a new coffee shop that opened up in the downtown and spotted two things that I thought would be the last thing I would see. The first was that they served up a Fair Trade Organic coffee on the menu which turned out to be rather tasty (say good-bye to Tim Hortons). The second thing I spotted as I went to pay for the coffee was a little sign by the cash register that informed me that they have WiFi available.
Granted they charged a buck per session but still .. WiFi .. in this little town .. wow. As far as I know this is the only business here to offer such a thing and when I asked the girl taking my money how it was working out she said it was doing really well.
It’s too bad I don’t have a laptop as between having a WiFi service and some good coffee I could have found a new place to hang out in the afternoon. WiFi - fair trade organic coffee - Lindsay .. wow ….
