As I continue in consolidating a bunch of stuff in order to make my daily web life a little easier to navigate through one of the things I have been considering the last couple of days involved totally rethinking my stance on web mail apps. I have stated before that I don’t like them and for the most part I still don’t. I have a real problem with the idea that my personal emails are being held outside of my control and not knowing how that information is being used as fodder for advertising.
On the opposite side of the fence though; and something that I have experienced on more than one occasion, is things like changing hosting companies if you host blogs or changing internet providers and then right down to system crashes or rebuilds. Any one of those can potentially endanger either access to your email accounts or emails that you have been storing for - in many cases - years.
For most people getting themselves a couple of email addresses isn’t much of a hassle but for those of use that live on the web our email is our life blood. Without it we might as well be running around like a chicken with our heads cut off. Many people won’t worry about things like privacy or security as they think it isn’t relevant in today’s wired world where we all have to give up something for the free apps we use. Others are more concerned about this almost mindless acceptance that one’s privacy is worth trading off for free stuff.
In the end though I have decided to slowly move my email on to the web using GMail but it isn’t something that I am still totally comfortable for a few reasons. Besides much of the things mentioned above I also don’t like the interface of GMail. While I am more in tune with the Live Mail interface I am not inclined to use a hotmail.com email address as it is often regarded as a spammer email address; which is really why I decided on using GMail over Hotmail.
So if anyone reading this has any email addresses relating to WinExtra or Steven Hodson in their address books this would maybe be a good time to change them to my GMail address - winextra @ gmail . com (and yes I know I can pull my old addresses through to GMail
).

The biggest productivity enhancer of gmail is realizing you don't have to sort mail by folders. Just search.

I feel that's a good compromise. I get the advantages of using web mail when I'm away from home but then pull everything down so Google doesn't have its hands on my emails past a week.
