Yes the inevitable has happened - the mass spamming of Twitter has begun and yet people are whining about it as if there is anything that Twitter can do about it. The fact is that the very openness of Twitter that has attracted all the users it has is also the openness that has made it the latest feeding ground of spammers and unethical marketers.
Because of the way that Twitter is structured I don’t believe that there are any controls that it can institute that will even slow down the rampaging bots and stupid asses who think that we really believe that Ms. Spears is really following us.
Sure they have a handy dandy Block link and yes maybe having a spammer reporting function would be nice there is only one person that can make any difference to the spam you are receiving and that is you. Whether it be from turning off the notification system to taking a second and rather than just blindly clicking the follow button check out who it is you are going to be friending. Look - if it smells like a duck and it walks like a duck chances are its a frikken duck so instead of clicking the follow button hit the block link and then spread the word warning us of the doucebag.
How about a global identifier like !SpamAlert <spammer name> to help make it easy enough to spot as the Twitter stream goes by. Instead of whining and complaining about something that was inevitably going to happen get proactive and as a community that we are always brag we are let’s help each other make the difference in the spam problem.

Guess I don't see a problem... either that or I'm smarter than the average bread crumb (which I doubt).

And they are asking for feedback from the Twitter community about how spam should be reported. If you care about this, now is your chance to influence how this will work.

Like Steven said, it's going to take a community effort to take care of this issue before the spammers make Twitter totally unusable.

I am a little surprised the recent spam outbreak is a new development that no clever person anticpiated.

Also, not blindly and mindlessly following a spam bot back just because you're flattered by the attention.
Try looking at their posts - do they really share anything in common with you apart from a desire to get rich quick and seeing 'hot Asian babes' dance just for you.
These people really aren't that clever. Well not as clever as me anyway.
An automated program to do all of the above will be available shortly from all reputable outlets from some bright spark who likes monkey'ing around with Grease (and Asian babes).
