And the Twitter spam whine begins

Twitter Spam - click for larger view Yes the inevitable has happened - the mass spamming of Twitter has begun and yet people are whining about it as if there is anything that Twitter can do about it. The fact is that the very openness of Twitter that has attracted all the users it has is also the openness that has made it the latest feeding ground of spammers and unethical marketers.

Because of the way that Twitter is structured I don’t believe that there are any controls that it can institute that will even slow down the rampaging bots and stupid asses who think that we really believe that Ms. Spears is really following us.

Sure they have a handy dandy Block link and yes maybe having a spammer reporting function would be nice there is only one person that can make any difference to the spam you are receiving and that is you. Whether it be from turning off the notification system to taking a second and rather than just blindly clicking the follow button check out who it is you are going to be friending. Look - if it smells like a duck and it walks like a duck chances are its a frikken duck so instead of clicking the follow button hit the block link and then spread the word warning us of the doucebag.

How about a global identifier like !SpamAlert <spammer name> to help make it easy enough to spot as the Twitter stream goes by. Instead of whining and complaining about something that was inevitably going to happen get proactive and as a community that we are always brag we are let’s help each other make the difference in the spam problem.
