Merging your social networks with your inbox

Xoopit Screenshot - click for larger view As you have probably noticed already the news about Xoopit the application that is being billed as the first application for webmail to let you discover all those photos, files and other assorted rich media that is hiding in your inbox and then share them with your friends on the various social networks. At least that is the blurb that I got in an email from Alison McNeill.

Alison got a hold of me to let me know about Xoopit primarily because of what I have written in the past about how I felt that our email inbox was the original social network  which I thought was really good of her. The only problem is that because Xoopit is currently in private testing and is only available as a Firefox extension and only supports Gmail I can’t really check it out which is a shame really because as you can tell from the screenshots it looks pretty interesting.

I’m not sure what their timetable is for other mail platforms or if they even plan on supporting things like Outlook or Thunderbird but it would be interesting to see how they stack up against Xobni or ClearContext the to Xoopit Screenshot - click for larger viewmain social oriented add-ons for Outlook. My initial impressions from their site and the screenshots is that they are definitely gearing themselves for the consumer email market rather than the business user which is probably a good move.

There is sure to be much more written about Xoopit over the next little while but in the meantime if you are a Firefox and Gmail user head on over to the Xoopit site and see if you can snag yourself an invite. If Xoopit decides to shoot me a few invites to give away I will probably give them away on FriendFeed to good homes.

Update: Jonathan Bruck emailed me to let me know that you don’t need the Firefox extension as you can still use Xoopit for Gmail via the Xoopit website - Thanks Jonathan.
