5 things I would like from FriendFeed

FriendFeedHello my name is Steven Hodson and I am a FriendFeed addict.

Jeezz not bad for a cranky old fart who doesn’t hide the fact that he isn’t the biggest fan of this so-called social network and social media hoop-a-la that has every one and their dog hoping on the bandwagon. The fact is though that FriendFeed has become one of my two mainstays for doing this blogger thang.

The FriendFeed team has been really good at riding the crest of popularity and adding new things to make their service even more valuable and for that they deserve a lot of kudos. However us users tend to be a greedy bunch always looking for new stuff and even though the FriendFeed team doesn’t implement everything that is asked of them the community that has developed around FriendFeed has been quick to jump in with hacks and tips to do some of those things.

Whether it is a growing collection of Firefox and Greasemonkey scripts from engtech to Wordpress plugins the community is making FriendFeed and even better place from which to keep an eye on what is happening. That said there are a few things that I would really like to see implemented by FriendFeed that I think would again expand on an already great service.

1. Deep Threading: right now FriendFeed supports some basic threading - meaning that comments made are associated with the post they are being made on. Deep threading would take this to the next logical step by allowing us to comment on comments and be displayed under them.

2. Liking Comments: right now you can ‘Like’ the originating post but sometime the comments can even be better and being able to like them would be a nice bonus.

3. Bookmark/Flag a post or comment: there is no functionality for us to be able to bookmark or flag a post; or even comment if we want to get really feature greedy, to be able to come back to. Sometimes the feed can roll over so fast that something that we have made a mental note to come back to even minutes later has already rolled by. To be able to bookmark items would be a real nice bonus.

4. Global service and person blocking: Right now you can block services on an individual basis which can be a pain if you want to block at a more base level (yes I’m looking at you Twitter streams). From what I understand the team is looking to implement this but want to make sure it is done right.

5. Desktop clients: Now that FriendFeed has released their API let’s bring on those desktop clients folks. Word is that at least one client is being developed with Adobe AIR so we can see that it is happening but for those of us wanting them it couldn’t happen fast enough.

Well that’s my current wish list - what would you like to see FriendFeed?
