An yet another entrant into the field of social “lifestreaming” aggregators has opened its doors via invitations only - or at least that is what the email said that I found waiting for me this morning. Then I noticed a few posts showing up in my feed reader primary among them being TechCrunch’s warning for FriendFeed to watch out.
*YAWN*
So here we have a half baked social lifestreaming service that claims to make you life easier because it goes out and figures out who your friends are on the networks that you have handed over your information for. Cool .. the perfect vehicle for those like Robert Scoble and other social network mavens who are probably getting carpal tunnel syndrome from having to enter in the same info all the time; but what about those of us that like to pick our friends thank you very much.
*YAWN*
With all the hype TechCrunch seems to be piling on this half completed by invitation only social whatever one has to wonder if they’ve decided to take a piece of the pie somewhere along the way. As far as I am concerned though this partial attempt at yet another social lifestreaming Borgification of our life on the net still leaves a lot to be desired. Out of all of the networks that I participated in the only one that SocialThing had a hook for was Twitter and I see enough of my Twitter stream littered all over the place that I don’t need another one.
As for TechCrunch’s enthused proclamation that FriendFeed had better watch out I’ll leave the best answer for that yet to Corvida at SheGeeks to sum up:
As for taking FriendFeed’s light; I doubt it. FriendFeed is easy enough and I happen to like picking and choosing whom to add and dismiss. That’s not something I want automated regardless of who I’m friends with. Sometimes, friends on certain networks don’t overlap and I certainly wouldn’t add all of my Twitter followers to FriendFeed nor SocialThing! Having a choice isn’t a bad thing and doesn’t make life that much of a hassle TechCrunch. I think Mark Hendrickson is simply being lazy! =P
