Google is the king.
Google can do no wrong.
Google is the epitome of do no evil.
All those things may be the case; although the last one could be extremely questionable, but let’s take a second and look at a few things. Google indexes a crap load of pages every second of every day. People have come to rely on them to be God’s gift to internet searching. Along with that it also through its blogging division serves up a lot of blog pages. Then we have Google Groups which is their gateway to USENET newsgroups and let me tell you there’s a lot of traffic going on there as well.
However there is also something else that is going on throughout all those parts of the Google empire. They are also serving up a crap load of spam and porn. In three posts today over at Sunbelt Blog Alex Eckelberry has been documenting the proliferation of splogs, Google Groups spamming and porn search results. I know from personal experience here that Blogspot / Blogger has to be among the worst offenders for allowing the proliferation of splogs that has created spam and trackback hell for bloggers.
And yet nothing appears to be done to combat this while at the same time Google is doing the old PageRank smackdown of bloggers who use services like Text-Link-Ads or other such paid link services in order to make a few bucks. In the meantime Google is making millions off of all these splogs that now inhabit our ecosystem courtesy of Google. As for the search results we are getting these days they seem to be more populated by shit that anything useful. We spend more time having to filter out the garbage that is polluting the thousands of returned pages - again courtesy of Google apparent lack of concern.
At what point do we reach the garbage tipping point with Google and decide that the frustration isn’t worth being another cool Google user. At what point do the competition search engines look attractive - not because they are better but because they return less garbage.
Google may be rolling in the dough but if it doesn’t start really caring more about the results we want more than their share price they are only cutting their own throat.

Google is mostly "good enough" for most people. Think of 5 things 5 family members would search for. Do the search, pick one of the top 3 results: good enough.
For other search engines to take a front position by "sucking less" is not an option.
