It must be a given in our web world that once an idea is published to the web there will soon be copy cats following it. This has definitely held true for FriendFeed who just went public today along with a $5 million dollar round of financing. From what I can tell iminta is among the first crop of FriendFeed copy cats to have surfaced even though it is still in ‘by invitation only’ beta testing.
I was lucky enough to get an invite from Frederic over at The Last Podcast and I have spent the last little bit kicking tires of this potential competitor to FriendFeed. While iminta appears to provide much the same service as FriendFeed it has dressed itself up a bit more colorfully than FriendFeed as you can see from the screen shot.

I can understand the idea of jazzing up the UI a little after all FriendFeed does seem a little on the sparse side but I think that is to its benefit. My feeling with looking through iminta is that as nice as it might look, too much space is being wasted in an effort to look good. Space that in my opinion would have been better used presenting the actual information.
I’ll be playing around with it to see if this feeling changes and in that regard I have 10 invites to give away; which I’ll be doing via Twitter. As it stands now though I don’t think I have seen anything that could convince me to switch from FriendFeed and I don’t see any real compelling reason for anyone else to do the same.
