Why Yahoo! sucks

Where are you going Yahoo? It is no wonder that confusion reigns over what is happening at Yahoo. Whether it be Yang’s non 100 day timetable or the fact that up to 20% of the their workforce is looking for their pink slips to start showing up - Yahoo as a brand in my opinion has totally lost its identity. I’m not referring to the many excellent developers and engineers that are trying their best under trying circumstance - no this is a definite top down problem peanut butter or no peanut butter.

For a while Yahoo seem to be buying up a diverse bunch of Web 2.0 companies in order to drape itself with the aura of being a Web 2.0 company by default. They are sitting on top of one of the best photographic communities around and yet other than forcing a common sign-in ID between Yahoo and Flickr nothing has been done. Instead they have been like a chicken with its head cut off running around pushing out social network after social network only to have them left lying in the dirt like a dead fish.

Only recently have they gotten the brilliant idea of tying in their del.icio.us property to search result - only time will tell if this is a permanent addition or if like everything else it will fall by the wayside.

As with Flickr Yahoo has also forced this unified sign-in on members of the MyBlogLog service which for some reason they purchased during one of their buying sprees. Now I was a happy MBL user and liked the potential that the little start-up showed and I am sure that somewhere in there the potential is still there except I’ll never know. The reason is that I am basically locked out of my previous MBL account because Yahoo can’t seem to get its shit together over this stupid idea of unifying accounts.

Here’s a hint Yahoo - I didn’t sign up to be a member of Yahoo when I joined MBL regardless of you buying them or not. Now high marks has to go out to Ian Kennedy of the MBL team because he has tried to be of help when I posted about this screw up back in December but when a web company can’t even email you a reset code for your password within a two week period something is desperately wrong.

So I tell you what Yahoo .. nuke all my accounts and let’s call it quits because since you obviously can’t seem to get a simple thing like a confirmation email sent out in time you have far more serious problems and you should stay away from buying anymore companies and ruining them in the process.
