Everyone at some point looks at the computer they are using; whether it be a desktop or laptop, and daydream over what their ideal system would be. Everything from the SLI nVidia cards connected to a sleek pair of dual 30" wide screens with the fastest Intel or AMD chips under the hood.
Then reality sets in as we gag over the sticker prices that come with those daydreams. That doesn’t mean though that we can look at the whole situation and see what we can realistically improve if we keep the daydreams in check all the while picking out those things we could improve on over the year as budgets allow.
For myself I would love to be able to do the following over the next year in a semi order of need:
- replace some noisy fans one of which is sounding a little sickly
- upgrade my nVidia GeForce 6600 GT card to something with a little more guts
- replace keyboard / mouse with a really sleek wireless setup - hey function and beauty - nothing wrong with that eh
- a nice set of 5.1 speakers since I had to use the set I had for the media machine
- a good wireless headset w/ mic would be a nice added bonus as well since I’d like to get back to doing the occasional podcast again.
- I’d also like to replace my dual CRT monitor setup with some LCD monitors - I’d even settle for 19"
the one other area that could do with some upgrading this year as well is the media machine that I cobbled together for Kim (my wife) at the tail end of 2007. Some parts are a little more important but not as many parts are need in this case;
- gotta get a new PSU as the one currently in place is getting flaky
- while the current Radeon 9200 LE does the job I’d really like to upgrade that to at least the 9600 series or better because at that point ATI has MCE specific drivers available - anything to help make Kim’s view a little more pleasurable.
- but the big thing I really want to do is overhaul the hard drives as they were flaky when I put the system together and they haven’t gotten any better. Not too mention the whole space issue which with media machines always seem to be a losing battle
Now realistically if things go well on the blogging front this year and the advertising dollars keep improving the way they are; or donations keep the pace they are, everything listed is probably doable. Plus the brownie points for improving the media machine would be a big bonus.
So what would your hardware list look like if you were to upgrade over the next year without having to eat Mac ‘n Cheese to be able to do it?

But I will definitely keep it in mind - thanks

The problem is that I could probably refurbish both the machines for less than it would cost me for one Mac - that isn't saying I wouldn't like one but such a case would be a financial impossibility unless contrary to what Dave Winer thinks advertising across my blogs does more than exceptionally well :)
