A simple way to drive away your user base

MyBlogLog I have been a using the MyBlogLog service pretty well since it first came on the scene and have written about it a few times but today is my see ya later post as I have removed the widget from the sidebar on all three of my blogs.

It’s not because of the service itself screwing up or the fact that I don’t think it is as popular as it was or the fact that nothing has been done to improve the service beyond some new About Me widget I heard about via Louis Gray’s blog. I say heard about because I can’t log into my account with MBL and all I have gotten from the new Yahoo! version of the company is a form email a week after I sent in a request for help.

The reason this all happened is because when I upgraded to XP from Vista I was faced with the lovely chore of remembering all my sign in information for the different services and such. Now I have gotten into the habit being a cranky old fart of keeping the most common sign in stuff fairly simple and the same across most of the services. So I go to sign into my MyBlogLog account and find myself faced with having to sign in into Yahoo because they had gone an merged my account; and thus began an hour of screwing around that left me frustrated and pissed off.

So as a last resort I tracked down the Yahoo/MBL I’ve got a bitch contact form and sent them the following:

I am really trying to be patient here but I have been running around in frikken circles trying to log into my MyBlogLog account. I have never seen such a convoluted mess in my life for trying to login into an account. First it asks me for my yahoo info and then asks me for my MyBlogLog account info which when I try use it tells me that it is part of a merged account … the short of it is that I can’t log into my account.

This is nothing short of a stupid setup and has me on the verge of pulling the MyBlogLog widget from my blogs - which I am sure wouldn’t matter to Yahoo/MBL unless I was someone like Scoble or Calacanis and the like.

And waited for a reply … and waited … and waited. Now I sent in the request for help on the 16th of December and it took them 5 days to take the time to carefully consider my request and send me the following:

New and Improved Yahoo! Mail - better than ever!

Yup .. I got a form letter of empty platitudes - or at least it sure feels that way. It is now the 29th of December and regardless of any Christmas holidays I still haven’t heard squat.

If this is what happens when a good service is bought by a big ass corporation then it sure makes me gun shy from trying any other hot to trot Web 2.0 startups for fear of this same type of user disconnect happening again.

It was nice knowing you MyBlogLog - to bad Yahoo screwed up a simple thing like letting your members sign in.
