There are some things in this world that are just patently obvious. Case in point came through in a post by Steve Clayton this morning where he made mention of an upcoming conference in February called Customer Service is the New Marketing. The comment by Steve that “… isn’t customer service the OLDEST form of marketing?” is in my opinion right on the money.
In my younger years I have worked as a bartender and other various jobs in the service industry and the earliest lesson you learn is that your livelihood depends on your customer believing that they have been given the best service possible. It’s a matter of economics; especially in the service industry, as happy customer equals better tips.
The idea that good customer service is something new and marketable is bullshit. Ever since the first hooker accepted a saber tooth tiger pelt from the first john customer service has been one of the most important keys of success for any business. The idea that this is some new and great concept because of the internet, social networks and all the other ways of reaching out to a customer base does more to show me that like other mediums the marketers are trying desperately to justify their existence.
