For the better part of this last year everywhere you turn in the blogosphere and even the larger internet itself everything has been somehow relabeled with social this and social that. It doesn’t matter if it’s a social network or social graph or social porn - well okay maybe not the last one but hey the year isn’t over yet.
Now we have The Semantic Web Group (doesn’t that sound all official and crap) at the Distributed Systems Institute of the University of Hannover …. hang on I gotta get my breath after that mouthful … wanting to get us all hot and bothered over something they call GroupMe! - a Social Tagging System. See what I mean everything has to have social attached to it like some social disease or something.
Don’t get me wrong I think tagging is an incredibly powerful way for us to create conversation streams, to link ideas and concepts across a global community but that doesn’t make the concept of tagging anything close to social. It does however get a possible good idea for expanding the usability of tagging discussed more but that is the only redeeming feature of calling it social tagging.
