Since the latest round of internet chest pounding and vile verbal attacks against blogger Kathy Sierra there has been an attempt to stop what is being billed as cyberbullying. The latest attempt is being led by Andy Carvin via his blog and on Twitter.
Now you’ll notice my use of “latest” in the above and the reason for that is because this is nothing new at all. Sure it doesn’t make it right - far from it; however regardless of Andy’s good intentions setting up a single day to supposedly raise awareness of this cyberbullying won’t be going anywhere.
I have seen this type of thing long before the Internet and blogs were around. It existed back in the days of the FidoNet echoes (old fashion forums and newsgroups for you internet youngsters) and it will continue to exist long after Andy has gone onto the next big conversation fad of the web.
While the reasons a person might become a cyberbully is as wide and varied as the number of pop-psy touchy feely diagnosis’s for everyday ills floating through our society it all boils down to a simple fact that given the chance a large portion of our society is made up of people who love to attack others.
It isn’t nice - it isn’t right but it’s all around us.
Don’t think so then just watch any political ad during an election cycle, watch any comedy that makes fun of people rather than situations. Our society revolves around belittling others; whether it be at a PTA meeting or a 1938 vidcast. Our hunting instinct for meat has been shifted from the animal to the person and their place in society.
If you don’t think that there weren’t people sitting on the sidelines watching this latest example of stupidity that was occurring around Kathy then you are living in a dream world. I would place bets on the fact that there were folks reading and feeling good that another person was getting smacked down.
You could proclaim every other day as Stop Cyberbullying Day and it won’t make one bit of difference. You might as well tell every NRA member to hand over their guns to the police. Cyberbullying is just another outlet for mean people - the Internet just provides them with an anonymous way to go hunting.
